Historian CR Gibbs completes his four part series: The good news is that both locations, Gadsden's Wharf in South Carolina and Valongo Wharf in Rio de Janeiro, stand on the verge of recognition, restoration, and memorialization but at far distant stages. The South Carolina, USA museum has delayed its January opening.

As the International African American Museum schedules to open in January 2023, on the former site of Gadsden Wharf in Charleston, CR Gibbs draws a historical line from that slave port to the slave port at Valongo Wharf in Rio de Janeiro. (This is the third article in a four part series.)

Many residents and visitors showed great pride in the 19 wharves that lined the Cooper River. Charleston had become the hub of southern Atlantic commerce. There was little discussion permitted that its opulence was built on and sustained by an army of Black bodies robbed of life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness.

Just as contemporary African Americans often "detect some Black" in various persons, a Black man in 1842 used similar instincts. "There she met a Colored man who suspected her to be a fugitive and told her Alton was not safe and led her to a stagecoach headed for Milwaukee."
