Celebrating 30 Years of POH

In November 1995, when Hearon–Young Publishing proudly launched the first print issue of Port of Harlem magazine, the journey from creation to distribution took significantly longer than it does today with digital technology. The Feb 2005 – Apr 2005 pink publication was our first full–color issue and a quarterly. During this period, color printing had become comparatively cheap to black–and–white printing.

From Prison to Marriage via Port of Harlem

Ivy read one of my Port of Harlem (POH) articles and wrote me to say God told her to encourage me. That initial letter was the start of a relationship that resulted in marriage 14 years later. POH readers even donated a stipend to pay me as I wrote articles after my return.

A Remarkable Journey from Brooklyn to Kigali

Born in the Netherlands, Drs. Mireille Liong was raised in Suriname and has lived in both countries, as well as in the United States. She is currently residing in Rwanda. She was the Nov 10 – Apr 11 cover model for Port of Harlem magazine. Liong also helped the magazine's non–profit select the inclusion of Surinamese Sophie Redmond in The Gambia's "From These Shores" exhibit.
