Louis Gossett Jr. at the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Associates presents an evening with actor Louis Gossett Jr. Saturday May 22, 7p in the Smithsonian’s S. Dillon Ripley Center (1100 Jefferson Drive S.W.). Gossett will reflect on his career and the challenges he faced as an African American actor in the 1950s and 1960s with Dwight Bowers, curator of music, sports and entertainment at the National Museum of American History. Film clips and stage stills will illustrate his reminiscences.

Anita Baker Creates New Album

Anita Baker has just started work on a new album in Nashville, planned for release by Blue Note Records later in 2010. "I'm going to Nashville to mix it up, shake it and see what comes out," says the eight-time Grammy winner in her press release.

Baker will be producing the album with George Duke, Nathan East and Daniel Moore, recording in Nashville in part because, as she explains, "they still know how to make a record in analog."


The album will include Baker's collaboration with Snoop Dogg on a "big, lush" version of Curtis Mayfield's "Give You My Love" that she promises "is going to raise eyebrows." The rest of the album will be original material.

Jazz Night @

The Historical Society

Photo Exhibit Opens in Arlington

The Exposure Group’s 4th annual juried members show opens at the Art Institute of Washington Monday, May 10. The opening reception is Sunday, May 16, 1:30p to 5:30p. The event takes place at 1840 N. Ft. Myer Drive in Arlington, VA, across from the Rosslyn Metro stop.

Photos taken by members of the group have appeared on the cover and inside Port Of Harlem including a picture of a small sleeping boy (by Shelly L. Miller) and the other of a mature woman sleeping in a chair ( by Cedric Baker) in the just released current issue. The pictures accompanies the health article “Why We Get Sleepy.” In one of the two health stories, you will find a picture of a baobab tree (by Barbara Manor) to accompany, “Anchor of the Savanna: Baobab.”


 
 

22nd Annual Art Sale

on Barracks Row

Barry LesterAttitude Exact Gallery on Washington’s historic Barracks Row will feature the art of Shaunte Gates at its 22nd annual art sale. “We will celebrate with fine art, fine music, fine conversation, and fine libation” says art dealer Barry Lester. Executive Chefs Mark and John Woods will prepare the culinary delights.

Works by Gates have appeared in Port Of Harlem including the November 2004 - January 2005 cover. Most recently Gates created “Transcending,” a limited edition in honor of Howard University’s 140th anniversary (140 limited edition paintings are on sale for $500 and 25 canvas prints are $1500 from the law school at 202-806-8177.) Lester is featured at Port Of Harlem’s upcoming Build/Renovate Your Own Castle IV.

The sale is Saturday, May 15 from 5p to 11p at 739 8th Avenue, SE across the street from the Marine Barracks.

The Arizona Immigration Bill

is a Bad Law

“It will lead to profiling; just like they've done to us and never stopped,” wrote one Snippets reader. The reader was part of the 60 percent of all readers who think that the Arizona Immigration law is not a good one. However, one reader who thought the law is a good one wrote, “When your basement is being flooded with "water" you don't go down there looking for "dry" spots.”
