Black Women Architects Exhibit and Symposium

Washington’s Genell Anderson of the Amar Group and Harlem’s Roberta Washington will serve as panelist during Howard University School of Architecture and Design’s Mackey Lecture and 200+ Black Women Architects Exhibit and Symposium. Port of Harlem has featured both architects.

The symposium opens Friday, March 12 at 6a with a lecture by Toni L. Griffin, former Newark Director of Planning. The exhibit opens from 7:30p to 9p in The Mackey Building on Howard’s Georgia Avenue campus.

Saturday starts with a discussion on women and architecture education from 10a to noon. Port of Harlem cover model Anderson and Washington will lead a discussion “Women in Practice” from 1:30p to 3:30p. For more information contact Howard’s School of Architecture: 202.806.7424.

Ethiopian-American Celebration

of Motherhood

Join Ethiopian-American women as they celebrate the birth of a new child. The intimate gathering of women will include Ethiopian-Americans Mekbib Gebertsadik (entrepreneur) and Meseret Desta (award-winning artists), who are expecting their first child. During the gathering, women will learn about the customs, traditions, music and food Ethiopians use to celebrate the coming of a new baby in their lives.

Unlike in the Ethiopian tradition, guests are encouraged to honor this family with a gift before the birth of their child. The free event, sponsored by Empowered Women International, includes light traditional refreshments and takes place at Convergence, 1801 N. D.C. Joins South Africa on

Same-Sex Marriages

Washington, D.C. joined South Africa as the only majority-Black jurisdictions in the world to recognize same-sex marriages Wednesday, March 3. Same-sex marriages are currently granted by five of the 50 states (New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont) and one Native American nation (The Coquille’s in Oregon). South Africa became the fifth country, the first in Africa, and the second outside Europe, to legalize same-sex marriage in November 2006.
