Join a walking conversation in one of D.C.'s eminent examples of urban revitalization: the U Street Corridor. We'll discuss the factors behind the transformation of this diverse community, including public and private transit-oriented and mixed use redevelopment, and revitalization within a culturally and architecturally historic neighborhood.
The tour will start at the 10th Street entrance of the U Street/ African American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro Station and examine sites along the U St/14th St commercial corridors and the adjacent residential area.
Our guides will be Otto Condon of ZGF Architects and Scott Pomeroy, longtime resident and former Executive Director of the 14th & U Main Street program.

Jewelry Shopping at
Eastern Market
 The renovated Eastern Market is open and jewelry designer Anthony Driver, who is best known for bold silhouettes and hammered metal adornments couldn't be happier. “People are out enjoying themselves and business has picked up,” he says. In addition to his creations, Driver now carries products created by 125 women in Ugandan refugee camps and marketed by the nonprofit Paper to Pearls.
Eastern Market is also now home of the city’s first public 24-hour WiFi spot. Hot spots allow those with a computer, personal digital assistant or other equipment with digital Wi-Fi capability to connect to the Internet for free.

More than 30 people enthusiastically attended Port Of Harlem’s Build / Renovate Your Own Castle IV at Honfleur Gallery Saturday, June 19. “There were lots of questions this year,” commented architect Genell Anderson, who has presented at all four events and appeared on our print issue’s cover twice. “I thought the event was only going to feature one person, but I am glad that it featured other presenters. It was like you had all my answers in one place,” added Kia Chatom on NE DC, who is using the infomration she gained to make her space her castle.

Black Republican Wins in S.C.
State Representative Tim Scott won the June 22 GOP primary besting the son of the late segregationist Strom Thurmond. Thurmond has a half sister who is of African descent. After the death of his father it was revealed that the late Senator and a Black maid, Carrie Butler, had a daughter whom Thurmond never publicly acknowledged.
Representative Scott is a proud member of the National Rifle Association, opposes Gay marriage, and is "100% pro-life" including opposing euthanasia and assisted suicide. He has the backing of Sarah Palin.
Scott will face perennial candidate Ben Fraiser, who won the Democratic primary in the strongly Republican district. If Scott wins the general election, he will become the only Black Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives.
