Romare Bearden Giveaways
Celebrating the Art of Romare Bearden National Tour

In sync with the opening of The Art of Romare Bearden national tour,Collage of Memories you have the opportunity to become 1 of the 18 on-line and print edition subscribers that we randomly select to win Romare Bearden: Collage of Memories (Abrams Publishing, $17.95) or The Art of Romare Bearden 2004 calendar (Pomegranate Publishing, $13.99).  To also celebrate the tour, the more than 300 students in Port of Harlem's Gambian-American Pen-Pal program will participate in activities surrounding his work.

Bearden (1911-1988) described his way of making art as "putting something over something else."  Experimenting with fabric, photographs, colored papers, and other materials, Bearden expanded the possibilities of collage.

2004 Calendar Our two-year-old pen-pal program involves three diverse schools in Washington, D.C. USA, Sister Clara Muhammad (religious), Bowen Elementary (public), and Roots Activity Center (private), and in Banjul, The Gambia, West Africa, Nyato Nursery School.  Some American teachers will participate in a National Gallery of Art program for teachers and take their students to the exhibit.  Some schools will host a workshop that the Gallery developed for students and where students will create collages for their Gambian pen-pals.

Using the Gallery's teaching materials, Gambian teachers will help their students create collages for their American pen-pals.  Each Gambian and American classroom will receive the book-for-all-ages, Romare Bearden: Collage of Memories and The Art of Romare Bearden 2004 Calendar.

The tour starts at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (September 14, 2003 - January 4, 2004).  It continues at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (February 7 - May 16, 2004), Dallas Museum of Art (June 20 - September 12, 2004), Whitney Museum of American Art, NY (October 14, 2004 - January 9, 2005) and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta (January 29 - April 24, 2005).

Mokoli Productions will produce the first Miss Africa International Pageant at the Washington Convention Center in DC Saturday, November 1, 2003.  The evening will feature renowned African musicians, actors, fashion designers, dancers, artists and models from around the world.

A panel will judge the contestants in four categories:
  1. Fitness Attire

There will be no bathing suits.  Instead, contestants will wear sarongs displaying rich, colorful, hand-woven African fabrics.  Elders are advising Makoli Productions and will advise contestants.

The pageant will also honor African achievers through the Salute to Excellence Awards, which pageant organizers will give on the night of the pageant.  Nominees must be citizens of an African country or have one African-born parent or grand-parent.   In 2005, Makoli Productions plan to sponsor a Ms. Africa Intercontinental and include Africans born throughout the diaspora.

New From Thug Law, Virtue and Jesse Powell

by Wayne A. Young

Thug Life and Outlawz, two groups that the late Tupac Shakur lead, are back together for a second CD, THUG LAW - Thug Life Outlawz, Chapter 2.  The CD hits the stores September 2.  Though the group says it has the spirit of Tupac, their lyrics don't have the depth that Tupac eloquently expressed.

While the sounds backing THUG LAW are similar to those that Virtue uses, the fashionable hip-hop spiritual group focuses on a different message.  Track 4, "Thankful," on their new CD, Free is my favorite.  Though it sounds like a party song, the lyrics include:  "Just believe with your heart and confess with your mouth."  Free will be in stores September 19.

Already on the airwaves is R&B sensation Jesse Powell's new cut, "By the Way." You may remember the Gary, Indiana native's #1 R&B tune, "You."  His new CD also includes remakes of DeBarge's, "I Like It," and homeboy Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It."  Riviera/Liquid 8 Records releases his new, fourth and my favorite new CD, Jesse,  October 14.

Support a Local School - At No Cost to You

Every time you shop at Safeway or Giant Food, they will credit the dollars you spend to the school of your choice. If you don't have a school of choice, we encourage you to select one of the three schools in Port Of Harlem's Gambian-American pen-pal program. Without any extra money coming from your pocket, you will help these schools buy textbooks, computers - - whatever they need.

The three diverse schools in our program are:
  • Sister Clara Muhammad (religious)
  • Bowen Elementary (public)
  • Roots Activity Center (private)
Each American student in our program has a pen-pal at the Nyato Nursery School in Banjul, The Gambia, West Africa.

Join Giant's A-Plus Bonus Bucks or obtain a Safeway Club card. You may also join either program at the respective store's customer service desk.

Even if you participated last year, you must sign-up again. If you live outside Metro Washington, click here to see if any of your local stores participate in similar programs.
