| To some people, a pharmacist’s job is to hand them the right medication. To some pharmacists, the only reason to remember a customer’s name is to make sure the correct prescription is given to the right person. However, at some locally-owned pharmacies, customer service means much more than the brief contact that one may receive from a corporate owned pharmacy. These, “village caretakers,” tend to provide our communities with personal services.
Taking a personal interest in a customer’s health is shared by Elizabeth Puwo, a pharmacist at Columbia Heights Pharmacy. Recently, Puwo could not convince a diabetic customer whose glucose levels were normal, but who was still feeling ill, to go to the hospital. ''So, instead of arguing with her, I convinced her to walk with another employee to the nearby fire station, knowing that the medic there would take her to the hospital.” The customer was lucky, the firemen ran tests and discovered that her blood pressure was dangerously high and they rushed her to the hospital.
“Getting involved in our customers’ total health lives is part of our normal routine," smiled Puwo, who likes a clean environment and enjoys cleaning her house when not helping others. It is refreshing to know that they are willing to go beyond the call of duty for those in our community. |
