Anthony  Driver Jewelry Designs

In the early 1970s, I started designing jewelry by “banging up” silver spoons, forks, and knives, and incorporating African beads and copper wire into the designs. To me, style is the exhibition of external elements that speak for what’s inside and my early creations were expressions of my reaching for my African roots, which was a common theme in that era.

After the 1970s, it was not until 1996 that I started making jewelry again. And today, I still **** the rules when creating body ornaments. Like many designers, I continue to reach back for inspiration. My designs are primarily recycled designs from Kemit (Egypt) and many First World (Africa, Asian, Caribbean) motifs.

Currently, I favor setting small-sized, semiprecious stones or diamond accents
in 18K gold and sterling silver. I often add a bit of patina copper for its tremendously vibrant ochres, crimson red, and orange hues.  In terms of form, natural and geometric shapes are my favorites.

I was born 49 years ago in Freedman’s Hospital (now Howard University Hospital), Washington, D.C. Over the years, I have lived in D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and New York City. My Big Apple experiences, with its convergence of diverse styles, materials, sounds and tastes, have had the most influence on my work.

My wife’s blending of the practical, cultural and trendy also impresses me and influences my creations. When I make jewelry for her, I usually use gold, silver, diamonds, leather, and wood.  Ajuwa Khadijah and I have been married for ten years and my wish for her and other women is that they express their inner divine feminine divaness as funky as they can stand it!

For my brothers, I wish that they always step out of the conformist box that is so prevalent in men’s jewelry. Personally, I prefer silver rings, with a small to medium-sized diamond or stone, and silver bracelets including a new one I created for myself with one dollar coins.
