New Stadium Opens in Gary

Memorial Day 2003: There were no clouds in the sky, the temperature was in the mid 70s and 7,089 fans filled the 6,139 seat U.S. Steel Yards in downtown Gary. The city, just south of Chicago, has the largest percentage of Black residents among American cities with 100,000 or more people.

Even after the Gary South Shore Railcats lost 8-4 in the 11th ending to the Schaumburg Flyers, the standing room only crowd didn't mind. It was simply a great day for a city still bouncing back from the loss of industrial jobs, and White and now Black middle-class flight to surrounding communities and to other regions of the world.

One of the nation's largest Black-owned construction companies, Powers and Sons, built the stadium. Garry Templton, former National League All-Star Player, who is also an African-American, is the team manager. Local inventors in the team include two African-Americans including Gary native and Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon.

Lackawanna Blues - Studio Theater - Through June 22

The Studio Theatre is the final stop on the national tour of Lackawanna Blues. Tony and Obie Award-winning actor Ruben Santiago- Hudson wrote and performs the presentation, which showcases Santiago-Hudson's memories of his youth in Lackawanna, New York. In the production, he brings to life more than 20 characters — oddballs, drifters and one incredible woman — boardinghouse proprietor Rachel "Nanny" Crosby, the woman who raised him.

Santiago-Hudson was born in 1956 to a young Puerto Rican/African-American couple unprepared for the duties of parenthood. They left him with Crosby so she may raise him. Nanny and her boarders nurtured, influenced, entertained and reared Santiago-Hudson, instilling in him a sense of self-worth, morality and the love of storytelling. She showed him how to find the value in even the most defeated of those around him. With music, narrative and song, Santiago-Hudson breathes life into them.

While technically a one-man show, Santiago-Hudson is joined on stage by blues master Bill Simms, Jr.. While he obtained his formal musical education at Ohio State University, his degree in the blues comes from working with many legendary musicians including Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Howlin' Wolf and Jerry Butler.

Lackawana Blues runs June 6 – 22, 2003 in the Milton at The Studio Theatre, 1333 P Street, NW (Northeast corner of 14th and P Streets) in Washington, D.C.
