At Home, on the Down-Low,
with J.L. King
By  Wayne A. Young

In a north side high rise condominium, off Chicago's glittery Michigan Avenue, and near its bustling Loop and sparkling Lake Michigan shoreline, author J.L. King favors his den.   "That is where I like to relax, watch TV, have my books and artworks, and can just be JL," he said in a masculine voice.  In reference to East Lakeview, the White gay-identified neighborhood that is also on the Windy City's north side, he continued,  "No, I don't live up in Boystown."

However, in some ways, King, who is bisexual, fits the stereotype of a gay man.  He doesn't like sports, loves the arts, and considers himself a good cook. "I have a housekeeper," he says during our telephone interview, "but I keep a well-organized home."

Since the release of his deeply insightful book, On the Down-Low: A Journey into the Lives of "Straight" Black Men Who Sleep with Men, more people are talking about bisexual men and how they are sometimes unknowingly transmitting HIV from the gay male community to straight female community.
